Deep Floor Cleaning

Series Part I: Floor Cleaning and Maintenance

The most important thing is to know which cleaning product and technique to use, since an uninformed choice can damage the surface or even mean having to replace the flooring entirely.

When evaluating different materials and their corresponding cleaning products and techniques, the key factor is the pH level, which indicates whether a substance is alkaline or acidic. Choosing a cleaning product with the right pH level depends on the type of flooring and the nature of the stain.

Carpet Cleaning

It is important to consider what type of fibre the carpet is made of and what kind of stain is involved, and the age of the carpet also plays a role. The easiest way to clean a carpet is with a vacuum cleaner using the dry method, but if there is a stain, other methods must be used.

Fresh stain on a carpet: simple tips for cleaning a carpet:
* Start removing the stain as soon as possible, blotting it with a clean, slightly damp cloth
* Cleaning movements should go from the edge of the stain inwards, to avoid spreading the dirt
* Avoid excessive rubbing
If the stain is no longer fresh, an additional cleaning product needs to be used. For a standard synthetic fibre carpet, we recommend using a solution with an alkaline pH level, slightly below or above 10, to remove the stain.

In public and heavily used areas such as restaurants, where dirt may be more deeply embedded, a more alkaline product should be used, with a pH level of around 12.

Note: it is important to check how the cleaning product reacts on the specific carpet. We recommend testing it beforehand on a less visible spot.

If the carpet is generally faded or hand cleaning no longer gives the desired result, it is worth considering professional deep cleaning of the carpet.

PVC and Linoleum Cleaning

PVC and linoleum are known as easy-to-maintain flooring materials. Common cleaning products sold mainly in retail stores tend to be quite aggressive, and using them can cause the surface to lose its shine.

For a safe and effective approach, loose dust and debris should first be removed using a soft, damp cloth or a vacuum cleaner. This helps prevent scratching of the surface, which is usually caused by dirt brought in from outside (such as grains of sand).
For daily maintenance, we recommend using a slightly damp microfibre mop and a neutral cleaning product.

If daily maintenance no longer achieves the desired result, it is worth considering a deep floor cleaning and waxing treatment.
