Floor Cleaning and Maintenance Guide – Part II

Cleaning stone tile floors properly is an important process for preserving the lifespan of the material. Strongly alkaline or acidic products should not be used.

Everyday cleaning products such as ammonia, bleach or other acidic or calcium-based solutions can seriously damage stone tiles (such as granite or marble) and strip away their characteristic glossy finish.

Cleaning Wooden Parquet Flooring

For everyday cleaning, it’s important to use effective entrance mats both outside and inside doors, as they help remove loose sand and dirt at the source – around 80% of dirt is tracked indoors on footwear.

When maintaining wooden floors, the type of finish matters. On surface-finished floors (lacquered or painted), avoid abrasive or strongly acidic products or techniques, as these can damage both the protective coating and the wood itself (risk of dulling).
It’s best to use neutral pH solutions and go over the surface with a damp (not overly wet) mop. Soft-fibre materials are recommended, as they won’t wear down the finish as much.

For everyday cleaning of oiled wooden surfaces, we recommend starting with a dry-cleaning method, such as vacuuming. If stubborn dirt has built up on the floor, use a neutral pH maintenance product designed for oiled floors.

As a general rule, stains on wood surfaces should be removed with a lightly damp cloth as soon as possible.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the cleaning product.

Cleaning Laminate Flooring

As with wooden floors, it’s advisable to use an entrance mat system at exterior doors for laminate flooring too. Everyday maintenance is relatively straightforward for laminate thanks to its tough surface finish. Avoid using soaps, washing powders and other abrasive products, as these have a dulling effect.

The best way to clean the floor is simple vacuuming followed by a lightly damp microfibre mop. Laminate flooring can swell if unsuitable methods are used, particularly an overly wet mop.
We recommend cleaning products with a neutral pH (roughly 6-8). The secret to long-lasting floor coverings lies in skilled maintenance. Good results come from correctly chosen cleaning products, knowledge of surface-specific requirements, and experienced techniques.

For everyday maintenance, we recommend using professional cleaning products sold in cleaning supply shops, and it’s well worth asking sales staff for further information.

Cleaning products are formulated specifically for each surface, and many of them both clean and condition at the same time.

Depending on the flooring and footfall, we recommend a deep floor clean and protective treatment 1-2 times a year, as surface cleaning alone often can’t achieve the level of cleanliness required.
